Busting Myths About Housing for Individuals with Disabilities

By Sara Crimm, Director of Families CCAN

What does it mean to “bust a myth”?

What kinds of preconceptions and misconceptions do we hold, especially about individuals with disabilities?

Can we create systemic change by disproving those assumptions?

These are questions the Families CCAN team, along with a talented group of self-advocates from Self Advocates United as 1 (SAU1), has wrestled with over the past 6 months.  With funding from the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council, we have organized a presentation aimed at an audience of individuals with disabilities, their family members, support staff, and allies.

We carefully break apart some long-held yet harmful ideas, effectively “busting myths.” Pointing out and discussing these misconceptions allows us to show that individuals with disabilities have choice in where, how, and with whom they live. Along the way we highlight the stories of individuals who live throughout the Commonwealth, in settings of their own choosing and with the supports they need to achieve independence.

We’ll be hosting these presentations virtually throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall, so check the Families CCAN calendar  for upcoming presentation dates.  If you would like us to bring the presentation to your class or group, please contact us.

This Blog will be hosting our Community Spotlight interviews, starting soon!

We’re working on a second presentation for 2025.

And we are still looking for individuals who wish to share their housing success story. If you would like to be considered for an interview, please send us a message through our Contact Form.

We are excited to hear from you!
